ELIGIBILITY. HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS SALES PROMOTION. APPLICABLE LAWS AND JURISDICTION. The Open Air Theatre has been a permanent feature in London’s Regent’s Park since 1932. The outdoor theatre is leased by The Royal Parks to The New Shakespeare Company Ltd which is a registered charity and a not-for-profit company. The season mainly takes place between May to September.

This Caribbean-fueled musical reimagines *The Little Mermaid* with magnificent gods instead of sea witches and tackles topics of race, classism, and colonialism set to an alluring backdrop of Calypso music. The show is one of the earliest works from writer-composer team, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Aherns, who would later create hits like *Ragtime* and *Seussical*. 

*Once on This Island* premiered on Broadway in 1990 and went on to receive eight Tony Award nominations. When the show transferred to the West End four years later in 1994, it won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. In 2017, the musical returned to Broadway in a production starring Alex Newell and Lea Salonga, and won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical. A film adaptation is in the works for Disney+. 

*Once on This Island* is based on Rosa Guy’s novel *My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl*. Guy set the fairytale retelling on a Caribbean-like island, inspired by her own Trinidadian roots.

### What is *Once on This Island* about?

The *Once on This Island* musical tells of a orphaned girl who must discover her fate. *In Once on This Island*, theatregoers join gods and mortals alike on a small island in the Antilles archipelago. Young orphaned Ti Moune unknowingly becomes part of a bet made between the gods who rule the island she lives on, ultimately testing whether the power of love or death is stronger. 

One day, after a terrible storm, Ti Moune finds a boy in a car wreck and rushes to his aid. The boy, Daniel, is the son of a wealthy hotel owner and a direct descendant of the French aristocrats who colonised the island. Despite protests from her parents and the other peasants, Ti Moune cares for him and falls in love. 
After Daniel returns to his home, Ti Moune has to decide if her love is worth pursuing. *Once on This Island* is a moving coming-of-age story about love, grief, sacrifice, and finding the strength to follow your heart.

Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens — the Tony Award-winning duo behind *Ragtime*, *Seussical*, and *Anastasia* — collaborated on *Once on This Island*. Since its 1990 Broadway premiere, numerous revivals continue to attract prominent actors to the mesmerizing story: Norm Lewis, Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, Lea Salonga, and Lillias White have all performed in the show.

This Regent’s Park production is no exception when it comes to great performances of this vibrant musical. Critically acclaimed and award-winning director Ola Ince directs the show , with seasoned West End actors Gabrielle Brooks and Stephenson Ardern-Sodje leading the cast as Ti Moune and Daniel, respectively.

## What to Watch For:

- Rosa Guy’s 1985 novel *My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl* inspired *Once on This Island*. It’s a modern retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, encompassing Guy’s Trinidadian roots. The author co-founded the Harlem Writer’s Guild in 1950, aiming to develop works by writers of the African Diaspora. Members and participants included Maya Angelou, Audre Lorde, Douglas Turner Ward, and many others.
- The 2017 Broadway revival played at the Circle in the Square Theatre and featured live animals, including chickens and a goat. and a river set at the far end of the stage.
- Gabrielle Brooks, who plays Ti Moune, is an Olivier Award-nominated actress. She's best known for playing Rita Marley in *Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical*. She also plays Nadia in the hit Netflix show Shadow & Bone.
- In 2020, it was announced that a film adaptation will be coming to Disney+ with a script by playwright Jocelyn Bioh and directed by Wanuri Kahiu. So, if you haven’t seen the *Once on This Island* musical before, you’ll want to get your tickets for this London production before it hits the small screen.
