It is 1887, the year Queen Victoria celebrates her Golden Jubilee.

Sixteen year old Rani Das, ayah (nursemaid) to an English family arrives at Tilbury docks after a long voyage from India, to start a new life in Britain.


**The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre** is a magnet for culture enthusiasts. Situated in the energetic neighborhood of Hammersmith, West London, this revered venue holds a significant place in the UK's performing arts scene. The theatre proudly boasts an enticing blend of household name productions and ground-breaking experimental works. Established in 1895, the Lyric Hammersmith remains deeply rooted in its community, with diverse programs that engage local talents and reflect the creative zest of its surroundings. This historic theatre features a 590-seat Main House, renowned for its expansive stage and state-of-the-art facilities. The venue also houses the 120-seat Studio, a platform for more intimate and innovative performances. Furthermore, it impresses visitors with its rooftop bar and grill, offering idea spots for pre-show dining or a simple enjoy of the London skyline.   

**How to get there**: The Lyric Hammersmith is a short walk from Hammersmith Underground station, served by the District, Piccadilly, Circle, and Hammersmith & City lines. Numerous buses also pass nearby, and paid parking is available at the Kings Mall Car Park, around five-minutes' walk from the theatre

The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is one of London‘s leading producing theatres. After two years of discussions, a theatre opened in 1888 on Bradmore Grove. In 1895, the Lyric opened as the New Lyric Opera House with a performance of *Dora*, a one-act play. During World War One, audience numbers declined, so to encourage new visitors, the Lyric became a house for touring companies.

In 1949, a production of *The Seagull* transferred to the West End. That same year, John Gielgud (of [Gielgud Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/gielgud-theatre) fame) directed Richard Burton at this venue. 

The Lyric was set to be demolished in 1969, but after a local campaign, the Queen reopened the venue a decade later. In 2018, the Main House was refurbished for the first time in 40 years. Rachel O'Riordan joined as artistic director in February 2019.
