Tracie Bennett was born in Lancashire in 1961. She then moved to London to train at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts.&nbsp;

Bennett’s theatre career began at the <a href="/theatres/savoy-theatre">Savoy Theatre</a> in 1994, appearing in She Loves Me&nbsp;and winning an Olivier&nbsp;Laurence Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. She later appeared in the Olivier award-winning show, Honk!, playing the role of Ida. In 2003 she was nominated for another Olivier Award for her performance in High Society.

Her success continued in her 2005 performance as Irma Brookes in Sex, Chips and Rock ‘n’ Roll at Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester. She returned to the West End in 2006 in the London production of *Les Miserables*, playing the role of Madame Thenardier. The following year she took on the role of Velma Von Tussle in the West End premiere of Hairspray at the&nbsp;<a href="/theatres/shaftesbury-theatre">Shaftesbury Theatre</a>, winning her second Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical.

Bennett then played Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow, which premiered at Northmapton’s Royal Theatre and then was transferred to the West End. The show then transferred again, this time to Broadway in 2012, where she received a nomination for a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play.

As well as theatre, Bennett is also well known for her roles in television, namely her various roles in Casualty, Next of Kin, Joking Apart, Burn It and New Tricks. Her most known television role was as Sharon Gaskell in Coronation Street from 1982 to 1999, filming 173 episodes.

In 2016, Bennett returned to the West End, playing Laura Henderson in *Mrs. Henderson Presents* at the <a href="/theatres/noel-coward-theatre">Noel Coward Theatre</a>. Bennett was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical at the Olivier Awards, but the show didn't enjoy critical success, running for just four months. She then played Carlotta in *Follies* at the <a href="/actor-profile/national-theatre">National Theatre</a>, alongside <a href="/actor-profile/imelda-staunton">Imelda Staunton</a>.

In 2023, Bennett will play J. B. Biggley in *How to Succeed Without Really Trying* at Southwark Playhouse Borough.

Following a SOLD OUT Edinburgh Festival Fringe run, as winners of the Underbelly and New Diorama Untapped Award, hit-show Blanket Ban transfers to Southwark Playhouse Borough.

Southwark Playhouse aims to inspire the next generation of theatregoers, creatives and stories. It aims to facilitate the work of new and emerging theatre practitioners at the start of their careers.

The theatre programme at Southwark Playhouse is shown in two venues, the Large and the Little.

In 2023, there will be two Southwark Playhouse theatres. Southwark Playhouse Borough will be located at 77-85 Newington Causeway, and Southwark Playhouse Elephant will be located at Dante Place.

The Noël Coward Theatre opened as the New Theatre on 12 Mar. 1903. In 1973, the theatre’s name was changed from the New Theatre to the Albery Theatre, as a tribute to the theatre’s long-serving manager Sir Bronson Albery. Sir Cameron Mackintosh acquired the theatre through his company, Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, in 2005 and renamed the theatre in memory of the famous playwright, Noel Coward.

The theatre famously played host to two theatre companies whose theatres were destroyed during the Blitz – the [Old Vic](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/old-vic-theatre) and [Sadler’s Wells](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/sadlers-wells) both performed at the theatre until their new theatres were built in the 1950s. 

The theatre also played host to the premiere of Lionel Bart’s world famous musical *Oliver!* The show was a huge success, running for 2,618 performances.

## Noël Coward Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has four levels - Stalls, Royal Circle, Grand Circle and Balcony.

The Stalls offers excellent views throughout. The high setting of the stage allows for good views.

The view from the Royal Circle is completely unobstructed and the seating is well raked.

The Grand Circle is set fairly high, but again offers unobstructed views of the stage. 

Whilst the Balcony is high, the seats are well raked and comfortable with a good amount of legroom.

Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's 1971 Broadway musical yields new emotions, textures and terrors with each repeated viewing or production. Nostalgia, as the old saying goes, isn't what it used to be. But <a href="/show/follies">Follies</a> is a show about the perils of living in the past that comes alive in the present, and reminds us - like Samuel Beckett's great work of existential terror Waiting for Godot or Chekhov's Uncle Vanya - that we have to simply face the cold light of reality and carry on. Yes, the show is really that great; like those plays, it is a defining masterpiece in modern theatre.Each production adds its own layer of nostalgia to the ones that have come before; and in this case, of a cast that came before when this one was first premiered at <a href="/theatres/national-theatre">National</a> in 2017. That has already created its own ghosts and shadows, as we now remember actors who've now left the show -&nbsp;most notably, Imelda Staunton and Philip Quast, who previously played Sally and Ben, a couple who once courted each other but married Buddy and Phyllis respectively instead -&nbsp;and enjoy their successors.Joanna Riding -&nbsp;herself a veteran of this <a href="/theatres/olivier-theatre-national">Olivier</a> stage, where she previously starred in Carousel, Sondheim's A Little Night Music and Guys and Dolls in the 1990s (the latter alongside Staunton) -&nbsp;has less nervous energy but a more wide-eyed sense of the grasping need at trying, and failing, one last time to get what she always thought she wanted, namely Ben. She doesn't seem quite as unhinged - but she's also terrifying and terrific.Alexander Hanson is more emotionally muted than Quast; that's partly because he has less natural charisma. He's punching above his weight to secure the attentions of either Phyllis (who he actually married) or Sally, but it&nbsp;shifts the focus onto them: what need is he answering in them?Janie Dee, remaining as Phyllis, now reveals more thrilling shades of her brittle, bitter persona underneath the extraordinary glamour she exudes; there's real anger - and defiance - in her rendition of the showstopping "Could I Leave You?" in which she calculates and itemises her own dissatisfaction with her marriage.And Peter Forbes, returning as Buddy, is also utterly wonderful as he loyally sticks with a wife who loves someone else, and made his own accommodations with his sense of misery.A Chekhovian pallor of lives not lived hangs over all four principals - and it is heartbreakingly contrasted with versions of their younger selves, thirty years earlier, who watch and observe what they've become (a stunning quartet of young performers Ian McIntosh, Christine Tucker, Harry Hepple and Gemma Sutton). That constant pull between the past and present defines both James Goldman's wonderful impressionistic book and Dominic Cooke's haunting production, with its sets by Vicki Mortimer, lighting by Paule Constable and above all pitch-perfect period choreography by Bill Deamer.There's so much to relish in this production that I could name every single actor, but I'll stop at one more newcomer to the 2018 cast, Claire Moore who is absolutely miraculous as Hattie Walker. She sings "Broadway Baby", one of the show's most famous songs, as if her life depended on it. It's the distillation of a performer's one-time yearning for the bright lights of Broadway, sung from the reality of what her life has come; and it sums up perfectly the show's overwhelming and powerful contrast between past and present.<a href="/show/follies">Follie</a><a href="/show/follies">s</a> is, and remains, simply phenomenal.<a href="/show/follies">Follies</a>&nbsp;is at the <a href="/theatres/national-theatre">National Theatre</a> until 11th May.Photo credit: Johan Persson

The Olivier Theatre takes its name from the first artistic director of the [National Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/national-theatre), Laurence Olivier. The auditorium was designed to resemble the theatre at Epidaurus in Greece, with the seating arranged in a fan-like fashion around a circular stage.

The Olivier Theatre is the largest of the three auditoriums at the National Theatre, completed by the [Lyttelton Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/lyttelton-theatre-national) and the [Dorfman Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/dorfman-theatre-national).

The stage itself is famous for its drum-revolve, effectively enabling the stage to split into two allowing scenic changes to take place underneath the stage and then be rotated into place within seconds. 

## Olivier Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has two levels, Stalls and Circle, both of which are steeply raked, offering exceptional views from all seats. The Olivier Theatre still manages to feel rather intimate, guaranteeing a connection with the actors on stage.

Another fantastic chapter in West End history has been gloriously (re)written, with not one but two spectacular reinventions -&nbsp;first of a theatre itself, in which the Queen's on Shaftesbury Avenue has been reincarnated as the <a href="/theatres/sondheim-theatre">Sondheim Theatre</a> and completely refurbished by its owner Cameron Mackintosh to restore it from a threadbare functionality to which it had previously been brought back 61 years ago from wartime bomb damage to a glowing and welcoming new warmth. Meanwhile, its current tenant -&nbsp;already the West End's longest-running musical -&nbsp;has itself been entirely overhauled, with Mackintosh taking the opportunity of its temporary 20-week closure for the theatre's refurbishment to replace the original landmark RSC production with a touring version that was first created for a UK tour as part of the show's 25th-anniversary celebrations in 2010. It was briefly seen in London that year at the Barbican - the show's original London home - running contemporaneously with the West End edition, and is even now on a new European and UK tour, currently playing in Zurich before it returns to continue across the regions in March. The first thing to say about it is that it still owes a lot to the original Trevor Nunn and John Caird production -&nbsp;the famous revolve of John Napier's original design may have gone, for instance, but now the actors merely mime the identical movement (originally the work of Kate Flatt, with musical staging now credited to Geoffrey Garratt, long an associate on the original production) as they advance across the stage in the ever-rousing Act One finale of "One Day More" as the iconic red flag is waved above them. Fans of the original will check off numerous such instances, including the indelible image of a dead Enjolras lying across the back of a cart. Crucially, too, the original costume designs of Andreane Neofitou are also retained, so visually there are plenty of references to the original production. There are also several cast veterans of the previous incarnation, including principals Bradley Jaden who was Javert in the final cast of the original and reprises that role now; Jon Robyns, previously Marius and Enjolras, who now graduates to the role of Jean Valjean; and <a href="/actor-profile/carrie-hope-fletcher">Carrie Hope Fletcher</a>, previously Eponine and now playing Fantine (and all three in spectacular voice); amongst others in the ensemble who also include fellow West End returnees Ciaran Bowling, Sarah Lark and Luke McCall. The show remains an ensemble effort, as it was when it was first created by Nunn and Caird. That establishes a welcome sense of continuity from past to present versions, but it is also given a fresh 21st-century inventiveness with Matt Kinley's sets being complemented by stunning painterly projections, inspired by Victor Hugo's own paintings, that have been niftily realised by Fifty-Nine Productions and Finn Ross, all of which are lavishly lit by Paule Constable. Mick Potter's sound is also thrilling, wrapping the theatre is swathes of sumptuous melody, richly played by the pit orchestra under the direction of Steve Moss. As both a producer and theatre owner, Cameron Mackintosh has always been about attention to detail; the reopening of this theatre and show gives him an opportunity to prove his meticulous care in both. But I also love fresh new details, whether it be the reintroduction of rear dress circle boxes that are newly named in honour of Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, or new cast members like West End regular Josefina Gabrielle, who - cast entirely against her usual sophisticated type as Madame Thenardier -&nbsp;is virtually unrecognisable and truly hilarious. The show remains a thrilling triumph. Here's to the next 35 years, as it looks set to become <a href="/show/the-mousetrap">The Mousetrap</a> of musical theatre; but unlike that murder mystery, there's hardly any mystery to why it's such an enduring success.<a href="/show/les-miserables">Les Miserables</a>&nbsp;is at the <a href="/theatres/sondheim-theatre">Sondheim Theatre</a>.<a href="/show/les-miserables">Les Miserables&nbsp;tickets</a> are available now.

The Sondheim Theatre opened on 8 Oct. 1907. TThe Sondheim was built as a pair with the Hicks Theatre, now called the [Gielgud Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/gielgud-theatre). 

The theatre was badly damaged in September 1940 when a World War II German bomb dropped directly on the building. The façade and front of house areas were destroyed. It took 20 years before the damage was repaired and the theatre reopened. Whilst the auditorium remained untouched, the exterior and foyer were rebuilt with a modern look.

The theatre has seen performances from several notable stars, including Fred Astaire, Noel Coward, and [Kenneth Branagh](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/kenneth-branagh). 

The Sondheim Theatre is currently home to [*Les Misérables*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/les-miserables), where it's played since 2004.

## Sondheim Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels - Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle.

The Stalls offers good views of the stage, helped by a noticable rake in the seating from Row H onwards. 

The Dress Circle offers good legroom, but the curving of the area means that the sightlines from the outermost seats to suffer. 

The Upper Circle has a very good rake in the seating allowing for good views.
