The **Royal Opera House**, located in London’s bustling Covent Garden, is a world-renowned venue for opera, ballet, and other classical music performances. Founded in 1732, this grand and ornate building not only houses the Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet, but also a large orchestra. Visitors are offered a profusion of stunning performances, ranging from timeless classics to innovative new works. The moment you step in, you'll be enchanted by its beautiful auditorium with its lavish red and gold décor and the awe-inspiring main stage that has played to countless breathtaking performances. In addition to the performances, the Royal Opera House also features fine dining at Paul Hamlyn Hall Champagne Bar, a gift shop filled with exclusive merchandise, and educational exhibitions. 

**GETTING TO ROYAL OPERA HOUSE**

Access to the Royal Opera House is as straightforward as the performances are nuanced. The nearest tube station is Covent Garden on the Piccadilly Line. It's approximately 3 minutes' walk away. Other close tube stations include Leicester Square, Charing Cross, and Holborn. If choosing to drive, the venue is inside the London congestion charge zone, with several NCP car parks located nearby. Limited metered parking is available in surrounding streets. For cyclists, Santander Cycles is conveniently located in the immediate vicinity.

Whether one is an opera connoisseur, a ballet enthusiast, or simply a lover of magnificent architecture and ambience, the Royal Opera House is truly a must-visit.

The Royal Opera House opened in 1858. The building was previously destroyed twice by fire (once in 1808 and again in 1856). It was originally named the Theatre Royal Covent Garden.

The Opera House assembled its own in-house opera company, and premiered Purcell's *The Fairy Queen* in December 1946 in association with the ballet company. The Covent Garden Opera Company’s first operatic production after the Second World War was *Carmen* in January 1947.

The building was extensively renovated in the late 1990s to update the facilities to meet the demands of modern productions and the advances in technology, and a smaller auditiorium (the 400-seater Linbury Studio) was built to house experimental productions and give new artists and new works a performing ground. 

## Royal Opera House Seating Information

The auditorium has five levels – Orchestra Stalls, Stalls Circle, Grand Tier, Balcony and Amphitheatre. 

The upper four levels are designed in a horseshoe design around the Orchestra Stalls and can feel rather removed from the stage. Boxes, lower and upper tier slips line the sides of the auditorium, but can offer side-on, restricted views.
